The manual says a lot, but here is the real world version.
I check chain sharpness before any significant use, keep the air filter clean or at least inspect it every few hours of saw time, top off bar oil every time I refuel and check chain tension whenever I swap fuel.
For deeper maintenance, I pull the bar every few tanks and clean out the groove, flip or rotate the bar when I start seeing uneven wear and check the sprocket before I assume the chain is just dull.
The things most people skip until there is a problem are the spark arrestor screen, which clogs quietly and slowly kills power, the clutch drum and the oiler port on the bar. Once you clean those out regularly, you usually end up getting a lot more life out of both the bar and the chain.
