Should our best logs be shipped overseas?

We just sold some logs to the mill, Ash is up, but none of it's being sawn locally. It's all getting packed into containers and shipped off to China. I remember the mill owner once told me veneer's nice, but it's great sawlogs that keep him afloat, but still something about it all feels off lately.

I know, it's really hard to watch that happen. It's the same situation around here, the mills used to depend on high-quality sawlogs to survive, but now most of the best ash is being shipped out in containers. It helps out in the short term, but it feels like we're slowly emptying the local market.

Do you know if your mill is thinking about shifting towards more domestic cutting, or are they just going with the flow of exports for the time being?

Yeah, I asked last time I was there, they're just following the export demand for now. Not much interest locally, and with prices up, it's hard for them to turn it down
