Got a logger lined up for my 8 acres but he's asking for a 40/60 split and with my 60%, I still have to cover taxes, replanting, and all the brush cleanup. Looking at used tractors and they're running $15k to 20k minimum or thereabout for anything decent. The tractor dealer keeps saying I'd save money doing it myself, plus I'd have equipment for other farm work. But I'm wondering if I'm just inexperienced and this is one of those "what you don't know can kill you" situations.
Is the 40% worth it for someone who actually knows what they're doing, or are loggers overpaid for work I could realistically learn? how long does it actually take to get competent at this?
