Portable mill troubleshooting, what setup change stopped your boards from coming out uneven?

I’m a weekend mill guy and I’m trying to get to that point where I can trust the results instead of constantly second guessing every cut. I’m not chasing perfection, I just want boards that come out the same thickness without me having to babysit every little thing.

A specific moment was when I milled a log into slabs that looked great on the first few passes, then halfway through the cut quality changed and I started getting a bit of washboard texture. If you could go back and give your beginner self one setup tip, what would it be, and what do you check first now when your boards start coming out inconsistent?

Is y9ur carriage tight, well braced, the rollers and rolling surface clean. Is it bouncing because you are rushing.

For a portable mill, the first thing I check when boards go uneven mid log is blade sharpness and tension. It can feel fine for the first passes, then you hit a tougher section or a bit of grit and the blade starts wandering and you get that washboard look. Second is log support, if the bunks or leveling shift even a little, the cut quality changes fast.

If boards start getting inconsistent, I check the blade first. A blade that is getting dull or has pitch buildup will start making that washboard texture. Then I look at feed rate, because pushing harder mid cut makes it worse. Beginner tip I wish I heard is change blades sooner than you think. It is cheaper than ruining good slabs.
