I’m still pretty new around chainsaws and logging work and I’m excited to learn, but I want to start with the right safety basics. PPE seems straightforward until you start shopping and realize there are a lot of options and price ranges. I keep hearing chaps, a helmet setup, eye and ear protection, and gloves, and I’m confused about what is truly worth buying first versus what can wait.
A specific moment that made this feel real was this week when I was cutting and a small kickback moment happened fast. Nothing bad happened, but it was satisfying to walk away thinking I got lucky and I should not rely on luck again. It made me want a reality check from people who do this regularly. What starter PPE would you prioritize for a beginner, and what piece of safety gear do you wish you had bought sooner because it would have saved you from a close call or a bad habit?
