Stump prices?

Any thoughts on where stump prices are going this year? I was offered about $250 a tree for 100 trees in January. It is a mix of white oak, red oak, black cherry, some hard and soft maple and several cottonwoods. I said no for now as I was hoping for better prices this year or next. I suppose a recession won’t help. This is in south central Michigan.

Hey DaleF,

Were these trees for $250 to just be dropped, or fully limbed and bucked to a size? Can you give us an average DBH? Thanks.

Hmm. Where are you located? Pretty sure it still depends on where you are so you still have to consult a local forester?

Boy, that's a tough one to call, like trying to catch smoke with your bare hands. From what I've heard around the campfire, lumber prices have been up and down lately. I know a guy who just sold some oak a few towns over and he said the market was a real mixed bag. Some folks are seeing prices tick up a bit this year for certain hardwoods but it's not a sure thing for everything on your list. A recession could throw a wrench in the works for sure.
