From my experience working with firewood processors achieving efficiency with larger logs requires some strategy. My current setup handles logs up to 24 inches in diameter and occasionally larger but maintaining a steady pace of 3 cords an hour works best with straighter logs around 18 inches. Ive been considering a hydraulic log splitter for the bigger rounds but only have a skid steer available for mounting. In my opinion these splitters seem more effective on a dedicated processor or tractor. Has anyone successfully used one on a skid steer and how effective is it for breaking down oversized logs?
Another concern is whether it can handle logs at least 10 feet in length. Shorter pieces would slow down my process and disrupt my workflow. If anyone has suggestions or firsthand experience using hydraulic splitters with smaller machines Id appreciate hearing how well they perform and whether theyr worth the investment for processing large logs. Thanks for sharing!
