Quick fun thread for the Logging Forum in 2026. A lot of us pick up random skills outside work just because we’re curious, and then it turns out to be genuinely useful in daily life when you least expect it.

What’s a non-work skill you learned recently that ended up being useful, and how did you end up using it? Bonus question, did you learn it from a person, a class, YouTube, or just trial and error, and would you recommend it to someone who likes learning practical stuff.

First aid basics. I started it “just to know,” but it made me calmer about small cuts and close calls. Took a short class and I’d recommend it to anyone doing outdoor or tool work.

I started keeping a tiny notes habit, just quick bullet notes after I do something new. I picked it up from watching tool setup videos and trying to remember what worked. It sounds boring but it helped a lot in real life, especially for repeat tasks and not forgetting what I changed.

I learned basic knot tying just because I kept seeing people mention it and I felt clueless. Now it helps with strapping stuff down, organizing cords, and even quick fixes around the house without overthinking it. Mostly YouTube and trial and error.

How to tell if someone is lying to me. Body language, eyes, hands, speech patterns and pitch, I can sit down with someone now, ask a few questions, and damn near like hooking them to a polygraph.
