What is in your beginner chainsaw kit, files, wedges, and spare chain essentials?

I’m still learning chainsaw basics and I want to build a simple grab and go kit that covers the essentials. I know PPE is its own topic, but I mean the tools and spares that help you stay productive and avoid unsafe situations. I keep seeing different opinions on what matters most, like carrying multiple chains, having the right file setup, and always having wedges ready.

This weekend I helped cut some wood and it was honestly satisfying when the cut went clean and the saw stayed consistent, but I also noticed how quickly things get annoying if the chain starts dulling or you do not have the right tool on you. I ended up borrowing a scrench and it made me feel like I should just have my own basics sorted. If you were advising someone new, what would you put in a beginner chainsaw tool kit and what habits around bar oil and chain touch ups keep things smooth?

Good question and a beginner kit saves a lot of frustration in the cold. For a simple grab and go setup, most people end up with a scrench, a file kit that matches their chain, a spare sharp chain, a bar groove cleaner, and a couple wedges. In January, bar oil and cold starts make you notice gaps in your kit fast.

What Alan said, plus I add a 1/4" ratchet, sockets, Allen keys, short extension, flashlight, extra ear plugs, Q tips for cleaning small places, and have it in a fanny pack.

everyone comments are on point! I wanna add one little tip, which is don't wait until the saw is dull to sharpen it. give each tooth two or three light strokes with a file every time you refuel. it keeps the saw aggressive and saves your back

for the kit, definitely get a raker gauge (depth gauge tool). if you only sharpen the teeth but never lower the rakers, the saw eventually won't bite at all, no matter how sharp it is
