Would you do easier work for similar pay? if no, what makes you get up everyday and still choose this line of work

If I couldn't log anymore, maybe off road racing motorcycles professionally, or owning a small old fashioned pub. I dabble in stocks 5 days a week, and actually make more money doing that, than I do logging. This morning I bought a little bit of a stock, likely sell it this afternoon, tomorrow at the latest.

That is interesting. Sounds like you have a good mix of things keeping you busy and making money.

I honestly love the work. It isn't really about the money for me. After working in the lineman's union for years (good money and great benefits), I began doing residential removals and such, as I developed a strong working knowledge of climbing and rigging through my tenure in the union. It was more enjoyable for me than dealing with the union politics and such. The BS I was continually dragged into really killed the love of the utility industry for me, sadly.
However, my big passion is being out in the woods, sending over big timber (especially dead wood) to develop nicely manicured forests for wealthier land owners in my area. I would do this for free!

That makes a lot of sense, loving the work itself is hard to replace, especially when the politics drain the joy out of it. Being able to work in the woods and see the land improve sounds like the kind of motivation that lasts longer than any paycheck.

I’ve wondered that too. If the pay was the same, I think I’d still miss the problem solving and the pace, easier work sounds nice until it feels dull.

Those easy job folks, are also going to the gym daily after work, or fat, all to often. Logging is like being paid to go to the gym.

I've done a lot of different kinds of work over the years but I always came back to logging. My brother, another career logger, said it best "It's not just what we do it's who we are."
